Japanese Stab Binding

The Ultimate Mini Album Website

I love the look of the Japanese stab binding.  It works best on soft covered books or books that can be folded near the binding.  I used a harder cover here - a great vintage box cover I had found at a yard sale that I was dying to use.  But it doesn't allow for very good opening of the book.  I have made a cloth book in the past and it worked great for that.  So with that disclaimer, here are the steps to creating a stab binding book.

Instructions for Japanese Stab Binding:

Create a template for 5 hole punches evenly spaced.

Punch five evening spaced holes along the left hand edge of your book using your template.

Do the same for your inside pages.  I used a Japanese Screw Punch.  This makes the job super easy and gives you perfect holes.

Stack your inside pages between the two covers and line up all the holes.  You are now ready to sew your book together.

I used simple embroidery floss for my binding material.  You can use waxed linen thread, embroidery floss, or any type of book binding thread.  Use a piece that is about 3 times the height of your book.  Here are the steps to binding:

Come up at hole 1 on top of the book as shown above.

Go over the top of the book and come out at hole one again.

Go down into hole 2.

Wrap around the outside of the spine and go back up through hole number 2.

Go up through hole number 3.

Go down through hole number 4.

Go around the outside of the spine and back up through hole number 4.

Go up through hole number 5.

Go around the bottom of the book and back out hole number 5.

Go back down through hole number 4.

Go up through hole number 3.

Go around the spine and back up through hole number 3 again.

Go back down through hole number 2.

Go back up through hole number 1.

Wrap around the spine of the book and back up through hole number 1 one more time.

Wrap around the top of the book one more time.  Tie loose ends together and snip the thread short.

And here is the back of the book.
