How to Make a Gate Fold Flag Book

The Gate Fold Flag Book is actually very quick and easy to make. You can use photos and journaling or shipping tags or even cardstock with embellishments for the flags. The one shown here is with shipping tags.

Supplies Needed

1 piece of 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 lightweight chipboard
2 pieces of 4-1/4 x 5-1/2 lightweight chipboard
3 pieces 12 x 12 different background papers
2 pieces 5-1/2 x 12 cardstock
2 paper clasps or small pieces of chipboard and cardstock and 2 brads to make your own paper clasps
Stamp pad
Photos or 6-8 shipping tags

Directions

Ink edges of all three pieces of chipboard with stamp pad.
Cover each piece of chipboard front and back with background scrapbook papers. Use the same patterened papers on the two smaller ones, and a different patterned paper on the bigger piece. The bigger piece of chipboard is your back and the smaller pieces of chipboard are your front "gates" or covers.

Score each piece of your 5-1/2 x 12 piece of cardstock every 1-1/2 inches for the spines. Accordion fold each piece.

Lay your 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 piece down on the table. Adhere one accordion spine to each short end of the back piece, so that the fold line is to the outside and the accordion spine is going outwards.

Adhere the front covers (the smaller chipboard pieces) to the top accordion fold, making sure that the edge of the chipboard lines up evenly with the fold on the accordion spine.

Either attach your store-bought paper clasps or create your own.
Wrap ribbon, yard, twine or even embroidery floss around the left side clasp and tie off in a knot under the clasp. Wrap the ribbon around your mini book's back and then wrap around the right hand clasp. Finally, do figure 8s between the two paper clasps, leaving some of the ribbon hang down from the clasps. Optional: Tie some beads at the end of the tie off.

Open your Gate Fold Flag Book back up to finish the inside. Attach a tag or a photo to the inside of the first accordion fold on the left hand side towards the top of the fold. Attach another tag or photo to the inside of the first according fold on the right hand side towards the bottom of the fold.

Attach a tag or photo to the inside of the second accordion fold on the left hand side towards the bottom of the fold. Attach another tag or photo on the inside of the second accordion fold on the right hand side towards the top of the fold. Do you see how we're staggering them?

Attach a tag or photo to the inside of the third accordion fold on the left hand side towards the top of the fold. Attach another tag or photo on the inside of the third accordion fold on the right hand side towards the bottom of the fold.

I used shipping tags on this one and just distressed them with a stamp pad. I added two extra tags to the front and back of the book to cover the backs of the brads. I am going to use this book for a Quotes and Sayings swap my Yahoo! group is doing. Ssssh, don't tell my partner yet.
When you fold up the gate fold flag book make sure that your tags or photos lay staggered - every other side.
