How to Make a Fabric Cover for Spiral Bound Books

Another use I have found for my abundance of fabric from yard sales is creating a fabric cover for spiral bound books. The instructions can be modified to fit any size book. I create a ton of scrapbooks with my Bind-It-All so this is another great way to cover these mini books too.

You will need 3 pieces of fabric. The first piece will be the width of your book when completely laid open, plus 2-1/2" by the height of your book or journal, plus 1-1/4". So, for example, my book measures 10" wide when laid completely open by 7-1/2" tall. So my back piece of fabric is cut to 12-1/4 x 8-3/4. You then need two smaller pieces of fabric cut to the same height (8-3/4" in my case). For the width, measure the front cover of your book and subtract 1/2". Mine was a 5" cover, so I cut the inside pieces to 4-1/2" wide.

Press one edge of each of the two smaller pieces of fabric over 1/4".

With right sides together, sew the two smaller pieces to the larger piece on the three outside edges, leaving the creased over edge un-sewn.

Turn right side out. Press flat and also press the top and bottom raw edge down 1/4". Use a zig zag stitch to hold that raw edge down.

Slip your book covers into the pockets of your cover.

Finish off with a ribbon or your choice of a tie closure.
